White Sands National Park has the most amazing sand dunes that I've ever seen. Some must have been over 40 feet tall. We had a blast exploring the sand and "dune jumping." Sunset at the park was beautiful as well.
The Organ Mountains are a relatively "small" outcrop of rock protruding from the desert near Las Cruces. This photo was taken at the entrance to Dripping Springs National Recreation Trail.
Ruins from the mining days still litter the mountain side along the Dripping Springs National Recreation Trail in New Mexico's Organ Mountains.
Adobe houses are still popular among residents of New Mexico. Here, a development of some rather large adobe houses is overshadowed by the Organ Mountains.
City of Rocks, once a remote collection of 15 foot tall rocks, formed by ancient geologic processes, is now almost permanently surrounded by RVs (there's an RV park onsite).
Native "Cliff Dwellers" built homes out of the rock in New Mexico.
The "Cliff Dwellers" also built structures away from the cliff face itself. This is supposed to be the remains of some sort of ceremonial complex.
The view from some of the cliff dwellings could have been pretty spectacular.
A short drive to the west of Las Cruces brought us into the Gila National Forest. This forested, mountainous terrain is not what most people think of when they talk about New Mexico!
