Some photos from a day tour on Franz Josef Glacier:
The guide explains some glacier terminology.
Approaching the glacier as one big group. We would later split into smaller groups for the climb up onto the glacier.
A Kia bird hangs out at the terminal face of the glacier.
An ice cave, where the beginnings of the Waiho River emerge from underneath the glacier.
We climbed the terminal face of the glacier, using hand ropes and stairs carved into the ice.
Another group explores a different part of the glacier.
A guide demonstrates an ice anchor, used to hold our ropes in place.
What a nice little stairway!
Another glaciology lesson.
Exploring the glacier.
A drainage hole, down to the icy river below.
View back across the valley.
We took turns trying out the pick-axe.
There's Kia up ON the glacier too!
The ants to marching two by two, hurrah, hurrah...
Some trail maintenance.
