Here are a few photos from a weekend getaway to the coastal French settlement of Akaroa, about an hours drive from Christchurch.
Driving out to Akaroa.
We stopped in at the French Farm winery for a snack and a glass of wine... mmm...
A war memorial in Akaroa.
Is that small child playing in the drain pipe?! What's that doing on the beach?!
Our accommodation at Cher la Mer backpackers was great... we had a very nice private room, and there was lots of space to chill out in the gardens.
Looking down over Akaroa.
There are several pretty decent hiking spots in the area too.
Okains Bay. That's some pretty thick fog coming in off the ocean...
We stopped in at the Akains Bay Maori & colonial museum... one of those ones with little buildings set up "as they would have been" back in the day.
Inside a Wharenui, or traditional Maori meeting hall.
An old colonial home.
Blacksmiths shop.
