Some more photos from the South:
What a cool spider! The body on this one was about as wide as my thumb. Very pretty... but also probably poisonous... I denied my urge to cuddle...
I asked this gopher tortoise in the middle of the trail at Torreya State park for a portrait... He wasn't very cooperative, but I can't really blame him. He was only about the size of my fist. I found out later that Gopher Tortoises are listed as a Species of Special Concern in Florida... which basically means they're endangered, and now somewhat protected.
Lizards seem to be almost as common here as they were in the parts of Australia that I have seen. This one posed perfectly for me on his branch in Torreya State Park.
There were some areas out at Torreya State Park that had obviously experienced subscribed burns... and not that long ago. Some of the trees were still smoking!
There are LOTS of very cool looking flowers around here in the springtime. Tallahassee has extensive flower gardens. However, this shot was taken on a hike out in a state park.
A self-portrait at the campfire.
This spider is commonly known as a banana spider. This particular individual was probably at least 2 inches long! That's twice the size of any of its relatives that I saw that day... and I probably saw almost a hundred of this particular species. They tend to like to build their webs right across the trail... at face height of course.
Pelicans are a pretty common site on The Gulf coast.
These little sand crabs are pretty shy creatures; many people don't even notice that they are there. But, if you look, you'll see that they're on just about every beach. I had lay on my stomach for a good 15 minutes to get this guy to come out so I could get this shot.
Another, less shy, friend from the beach.
I think it's amazing how at 30,000 ft you can already easily make out the curvature of the earth. I got to experience the most beautiful sunrise during this flight to Tallahassee for my interview with WRS.
This is my first sunset at a beach in Florida. It was taken on St. Joseph's point, one of the few west-facing beaches in the panhandle.
